Career Plan - Key Strategies and Actions

1. Self-Awareness:

Self-awareness has been the foundation of my career journey. Before choosing any direction, I wanted to understand who I am, what energises me, and what kind of work brings out my best. Through tools like the Holland Code, Myers–Briggs (ENFJ-A) and strength assessments – and through honest reflection – I discovered that I am someone who enjoys helping others, solving real problems, and continuously learning.

This awareness showed me that I thrive in environments where communication, empathy, and strategic thinking matter. It also helped me recognise my growth areas, like learning to set boundaries and not overcommit. Becoming aware of these traits has made me more confident and intentional in how I move forward.

Understanding myself made it clearer which fields suit me best. I feel naturally aligned with careers that involve structured problem-solving, financial analysis, advising people, and improving business outcomes. These areas match my values, my strengths, and the way I like to work.

Self-awareness is not a one-time discovery; it’s an ongoing practice. I check in with myself often, and this helps me make smarter, more meaningful career choices.

2. Explore Your Options

Exploring my career options has been an exciting part of understanding where I truly belong. Once I became clear about my strengths and interests, I began researching different fields to see which ones aligned with the way I think, work, and communicate. I looked into accounting, tax advisory, business analysis, and financial services, because these areas match my problem-solving mindset and my passion for helping people make informed decisions.

To learn more, I used university resources, spoke with mentors, attended career fairs, and completed practical experiences like the UTAS Tax Clinic and the H&R Block Tax Course. Each experience gave me a clearer picture of what the day-to-day work feels like, what skills are needed, and where I could see myself growing long-term.

I also explored different work environments — from corporate firms to small local businesses — to understand where I could thrive both professionally and personally.

Exploring my options is not just about choosing a job; it’s about discovering the kind of career that matches my values, my curiosity, and my desire to make a positive impact. This process guides me step by step toward a career that feels right for me.

3. Gain Experience and Insight

Gaining real-world experience is one of the most important steps in my career journey. I believe that learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom — it comes from seeing how professionals work, understanding industry expectations, and challenging myself in new environments. That’s why I actively look for opportunities to build my skills and learn more about the accounting and business industry.

Some of the actions I take include joining practical programs such as the UTAS Tax Clinic, completing the H&R Block Tax Course, and participating in university workshops focused on AIS, Excel, and business strategy. These experiences give me hands-on knowledge and help me understand how theory is applied in real situations.

I also attend career fairs, connect with employers on LinkedIn, and talk to recruiters from firms like Deloitte, BDO, and Bentley Accountants to learn more about industry expectations and possible pathways. Volunteering, internships, and part-time roles are also part of my plan, as they help me develop confidence, communication skills, and professional networks.

Every experience — big or small — gives me insight into my future career and brings me one step closer to becoming a skilled, confident business and accounting professional.

4. Evidence Your Skills (Knowledge, Skills and Attributes)

Throughout my academic journey and practical experiences, I have developed a strong foundation of skills that support my career goals in business, accounting, and advisory work. I believe the best way to show my abilities is through real examples of how I have applied them.

Through my Bachelor of Business studies, I built solid knowledge in financial accounting, data analysis, AIS systems, taxation, business strategy, and problem-solving frameworks. My practical work — including the UTAS Tax Clinic, H&R Block tax training, and various assignments — strengthened my ability to analyse numbers, communicate clearly, and provide helpful advice to real clients.

I have also developed valuable personal attributes that shape how I work:

  • Collaboration: working effectively with classmates and mentors
  • Communication: explaining complex information in a clear and friendly way
  • Attention to detail: essential for accounting and compliance
  • Empathy and professionalism: treating people with respect and care
  • Continuous learning: always improving my skills and knowledge

These experiences show that I am not only learning theory, but also applying it with confidence. My skills reflect who I am: someone committed to quality work, ethical practice, and helping businesses make informed decisions.

5. Develop Networks

Developing strong professional networks has been a key part of my journey. I’ve learned that the best opportunities often come from the connections you build, the people you learn from, and the communities you join. To grow my network in the business and accounting industry, I actively take steps that help me meet professionals and gain real insight into the field.

  1. Participate in industry-focused programs.
My involvement in theUTAS Tax Clinicand H&R Block Tax Training has allowed me to work closely with experienced tax professionals, ask questions, and understand real client scenarios. These experiences naturally connect me with mentors and industry experts.

2. Engage in university volunteering and career events.
Volunteering at UTAS and attending events like the TUBES Career Fair give me the chance to meet recruiters, accountants, and representatives from firms such as BDO, Deloitte, and Bentley Accountants. These conversations help me understand career pathways and expectations.

  1. Build connections on LinkedIn.
I regularly connect with industry people, share my learning, and follow organisations I’m interested in. This helps me stay informed and visible in the professional community.

Through these activities, I am steadily building a strong, supportive network that aligns with my future career goals.
